A.P. World History
Welcome to A.P. World History Advanced Placement World History is a College Board college-level course that introduces students to world civilizations and cultures. It provides students the challenge and opportunity to earn college credit during their high school years. The purpose of the AP course is to develop greater understanding of global historical processes and contrasts viewed against the interaction of different types of human societies. The course highlights the changes in international framework, their causes and consequences, as well as comparisons among major societies. The course emphasizes relevant factual knowledge used in conjunction with leading interpretive issues, types of historical evidence, and appropriate analytical skills. Rather than focusing on continents or states, we study cultural regions or civilizations. Periodization or how we structure past eras forms the organizing principal for dealing with change and continuity. Themes provide further organization to the course, along with constant attention to contacts among societies that form the core of world history. Students were introduced to the first half of this course in 9th grade Honor's Global History and Geography. A student’s performance on the AP World History exam (offered in May) determines a student’s eligibility to earn college credit. Course curriculum, materials, and expectations are designed to prepare students for the rigorous three-hour exam and the New York State Global Regent's Exam in June. |
